We caught up with Mark Johnson at Surf Expo and asked some Shaping 101 questions on Rocker and Foil—what they are and why they are important. Mark also answers how these concepts differ from surf to Stand Up Paddleboards.

Basic Definitions:

Rocker: In its most basic terms, this is the curve in the contour of the board from tip to tail. This is the degree of curve in the board—from no rocker and a perfectly straight profile or more rocker, for example in the nose or tail of a board that curves up.

Foil: The change in thickness or volume of the board from tip to tail.
