Tonight, Epic Food Company, Hobie and Distressed Mullet present a meet and greet and Terry Martin Fundraiser at Epic Food Company, James Bain’s amazing new restaurant at 5:30pm. 1125 Military Cutoff Road at the Forum.
Illness.
It can take so much from a person… sometimes.
For Terry Martin, it hasn’t seemed to take a thing. The bounce in his step is there, the twinkle in his eye is there, his laugh still chimes, his heart is full of kindness, his optimism still overflows all over the place, and his smile is as bright during this fight as it has always been. But cancer has taken the one thing that has been a fixture for Terry for as long as some people can remember…
The beard.
Terry Martin is a California surfer/shaper who has worked for Hobie Surfboards since 1963. He has shaped an estimated 70 thousand boards for everyone from 60s legend Corky Carroll to Tyler Warren.

Visit the Terry Martin Project here: http://www.terrymartinproject.com/
James Bain, waterman, father and epicurean is the newest and most familiar restaurateur on the Wilmington scene. No stranger to the area, his newest endeavor has been anxiously awaited by a loyal following from his fine dining days at Harvest Moon, connoisseurs of his Surf-Snack and Surf-Salt Seasoning Product Line and cameos at local eateries.
Nestled in the Forum on Military Cutoff Road, Epic Food Co. opened March 12 and marks a pinnacle moment in his life. It’s an idea that’s been brewing for the last four years and it had the opportunity to become reality when NOFO’s closing opened a new door for the seasoned Chef.
Fast forward one month and it’s the start of a new era for James. ‘Lovin’ Epic flavor and livin’ an Epic life at the beach’ is what it’s all about. As a husband and father of three, flavorful and fit-food that’s fast is on the forefront. Creating meals to delight the palette, keep up with the boys and 60 miles of boarding are all part of the daily menu he now extends out to the community.
Epic Food Co.’s kitchen opens at 8:30am serving up egg-white breakfast burritos built your way, Epic House blend coffee, fresh-squeezed orange juice and a basket full of good eggs.
The fresh and flavorful lunch menu let’s you build your own Epic creation to suit your day or dietary needs (many options gluten-free) or try a meal designed the Chef’s way…the Zing-E flatbread being a popular choice.
Kids (Grommets) enjoy a menu and room of their own. The Grommet Room, where no adults are allowed, provides perfectly sized tables and a showcase for little artists to display their sketches drawn on tray inserts. Children have caught on the to Epic life, taking ownership of their new environment and it’s somewhat amusing when a four year old greets you at the threshold pointing a finger and uttering “Your not allowed”.
Not to be left out adults are invited to unwind in the Lifeguard Lounge with choice of cerveza or a glass del vino from 5-8 pm, Mon-Saturday.
Diners can also gear up with global and local findings and flavors from Epic Food Co’s retail area. It houses everything from beach bags, body boarding DVD’s to take home casseroles & dips to make daily life more flavorful and a little easier.
We’re all glad James’ was rescued when lost at sea; he has created a sanctuary in which to fuel this epic life we’re all riding together.

Where are the races? The race is at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, 275 Waynick Boulevard Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 (910) 256-2251, blockade-runner.com/
Is there race day registration? No. To accommodate the increased number of competitors, we hired a company to do electronic timing. They need all of their data Friday night. The online registration closes on Wednesday night at midnight and in-person, late registration ($25 extra for open racers, $50 extra for elite racers if there are still spots open)
Where are the clinics? The clinics are at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, 275 Waynick Boulevard Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 (910) 256-2251, blockade-runner.com/
Where are the award? The awards are at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, 275 Waynick Boulevard Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 (910) 256-2251, blockade-runner.com/
Where is all the information on the race? http://www.carolinacup-sup.com
If I get to the race on the morning of the race, can I register then? No.
How are the races started? Harbor Island and Money Island (Recreational and Open) will be water starts. After we have our racer meeting, everyone will calmly get on their boards and line up between two buoys. We will let everyone know it will start in 1 minute. We will yell, “Racers Ready! Racers Set! GO!”
What are the rules? We are following the WPA rules. You can find a copy of the rules here:
Is there drafting: Yes, but only of the same sex and board length/craft type. If you are on a 12’6″, you can not draft an unlimited SUP or an outrigger. If you are a man, you can not draft a woman, etc.
Do I have to wear a PFD? Yes. It is the law and it is mandatory for all paddlers to have a pfd. It has to be on your board or you have to wear it. You have to have one with you. Not only will we refuse to allow you to race, but if we miss it and you are spotted, you will be disqualified. If the Water Police catch you, you’ll also risk a hefty fine.
Do I need a leash? Leashes are required in the elite race, but optional in the recreational and open races. On Wrightsville Beach, it is the law that in the surf, you have to have a leash. You will not be allowed to race in the elite race without a leash. You are not required to have on in the rec or pen race. But again, it’s recommended.
Why was the race capped at 325? Because the location can only safely accommodate a certain # of people.
Can I register on the race day? No.
Why is the elite race on the beach and the others from the sound side? The sound side can not hold over 200 people. We had to separate the starts for the three races to be able to keep it fun and safe.
How are you choosing the direction for the recreational and open races? Our goal is to make this the most enjoyable experience possible. We have 12-15 pros and over 300 regular people like you and me. We will look at the wind and currents and base our decision on what will make the course as fun and fast as possible.
How are you choosing the direction for the Elite race? We want the ocean section to be a downwind condition. If it’s south wind, we’re headed north. It’s more fun that way and incorporates an extra discipline into an already technical race.
Who do you think is going to win? The turtles at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, The people who benefit from Athletes for Cancer and all the incredible kids who surf at Surfers Healing. Nuff said.
Where do we park? Here is a map of Wrightsville Beach and available parking. We’ll have map sat regstration.
If you are local, please carpool. Get there early. Check in Friday night. Don’t wait.
When we park, can we buy a day pass? Yes, there are parking machines at Wynn PLaza, the Oceanic parking lot and by Tower 7 (Stone Street) where you can buy a day pass and park at a meter. You just have to put the ticket in your window.
What do I do if Martin Burzynski runs into the back of my board and yells at me? Do nothing. I’m not sure he’ll be here this year. But if he is, we’ll all have a beer after and laugh at it.

If you thought last year was good, wait until you see it this year. If you are interested in helping out, we could use the extra hands on deck. You don’t have to do much, just know what’s going on so when people ask, there’ll be a lot of us to be able to help.
Meeting 1: Wednesday at 6pm at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort
Volunteer meetingis at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort at 6pm on Wednesday. This is for anyone who wants to be an ambassador/volunteer. We’ll let you know everythign that’s going on so that you can help answer questions. We’ll be stuffing goodie bags for the competitors. Anyone whowants to help out is welcome to join us.
Follow Up Meeting 2: Friday at 6pm at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort
One last run through of the race course and events schedule. It’s during check in, so we’ll have a lot of fun, there’ll be food and people. Get there.
Thank you for your support.

“It began with the forging of the Great Cup. Two were given to the winners, immortal, wisest, and fastest of all beings. None were given to the Dwarf lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And none were gifted to the race of olympic sprint canoes or outrigger canoes, who above all else, desire power. For within this cup was bound the strength and will to govern each WPA race. But they were all of them deceived, for another Cup was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, The Dark Lord Hustrulid forged in secret a Master Cup, to control all others. And into this Cup, he poured his Natty Bo, his foam and his will to dominate all beers. One Cup to open them. One cup to pour them and one cup to drink them all.”
“One does not simply walk into Carolina. Its black Jetties are guarded by more than just hammerheads. There is evil there that does not sleep, and the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a ocean playground, riddled with waves and current and turbulence, the very air you breathe is an aquatic fume. Not with ten thousand boards could you do this. It is folly.”
“Paddlers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month and yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you.”
“You may win the cup, but never drink Natty Bos out of it, for then the agents of the Dark Lord will be drawn to its liquid power. Always remember, the Cup is trying to get back to its master. It wants to be won. It wants to be found. And most of all, it wants to be filled with beer and chugged.”
“Fate Has Chosen the Winners. Evil Will Hunt Them. A SUP Fellowship Will Protect Them.”
Do you think you can you handle the cup? Tell me your story, little one…
There are 15 more spots left in the Graveyard (elite) Race before it closes.
All registration closes online on Wednesday, April at midnight. (11:59pm)
There is still some room in the Harbor Island (recreational) and Money Island (open) races, but we’re steadily closing in on being at max registrants.
If there are still spots open in the races after registration closes, we will open them up to a late registration on Friday Night at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort.
Late Registration Fee (We get charged a fee from the timing company for late registrants):
We dont’ expect any spaces left for the Graveyard (elite) race, but may have room in the Harbor Island (recreational) and Money Island (open).

If you are looking to rent a board for the Carolina Cup or the clinics, here are some resources:
They are all great and can hook you up with a board for the clinics or the race.
This is your chance to ride just about every major board manufacturer in the US and beyond. It is basically the Outdoor Expo of the East Coast. Boards, Paddles, gear. And it’s hands-on. Try it. Buy it. Use it. Take it home. Leave it on the beach so I can have it.
I am a HUGE ADVOCATE of trying boards before you buy them. This is your chance. If you always wanted to ride an M&M or Bark, get on one. If you always wanted to paddle a Kialoa, Quickblade, or Werner, you can. If you want to try to inflatable Uli, hop on. If you want to ride the new Yolo 14 Race board. Guess, what. You can ride that, too. I think you get the picture. It’ll be a great opportunity to see what fits you, what you like. On flat water. On the ocean. Try them. They buy from your local shops. Support your local shops.
At the Blockade Runner Beach Resort.

Wrightsville Beach, N.C. … After its inaugural launch in 2011, the Carolina Cup quickly became one of the premiere stand up paddle board competitions in the world, drawing paddlers from as far away as California, Canada, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Open to pros and amateurs, adults and children, the weekend-long event will begin on Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29.

Anthony Vela of Redondo Beach, CA. Carolina Cup Graveyard Race Champ 2011
The dynamic and strenuous paddling conditions of the Wrightsville Beach area will pose a significant challenge to competitors returning for another year as well as those testing the waters for the first time. The main attractions are the myriad conditions – from the flat waters of Banks and Motts channels to the wind-chopped surf of the Atlantic Ocean.

Karen Wrenn, Portland, OR, 2011 Women's Champ
There will be three different long distance courses, along with the Turtle Kids Race and the Sunday Sprint short distance race. The three different long distance courses are the 3.5-mile Harbor Island fun race, the 6.5-mile Money Island race and the grueling 12.5-mile Graveyard trifecta traversing inlets, ocean and channels. There are different divisions for men and women, based on board length (14 feet, 12 feet 6 inches, 12 feet and under, Surfski and OC-1) and paddling position (prone or standup). Sunday’s Carolina Cup Sprint Races will be open to men and women, exhibiting power and skill on the short course with one buoy turn on the water.
Festivities for the weekend begin at noon on Friday, April 27 with standup paddleboard demos until 6 p.m., a clinic with SUP World Champion Candice Appleby and defending Carolina Cup Champion Anthony Vela from 2-4 p.m. Clinics will be followed by a race reception at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort from 5-8 p.m. The majority of the races will take place on Saturday, April 28 with an awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. and an after party hosted by Surfers Healing at 7 p.m. The weekend will conclude on Sunday, April 29, with a racers’ brunch, the Turtle Kids Race, the Carolina Cup Sprint Races, and more clinics from noon to 2 p.m. including one of the world’s leading SUPers Danny Ching.

Wrightsville Beach, NC: It is beautiful and warming up the the 70s today. There is a clean, thigh-waist high wave out there and it should stay nice for a while. The sun should even come out. The flatwater is glassy as well. Right now they are varibe winds at around 2mph. Basically nothing. BUT, later on, the south winds will kick up, chopping up the surf and making for a fun downwind. Probably in the 12-16 range.
Carolina Cup News: The bad news, Karen Wrenn and Chuck Patterson can not do the second clinic. Good News. Danny Ching and Riviera are now doing the second clinic, a beginner clinic. More details to follow! That means there are 3 clinics: (1) Anthony Vela and Candice Appleby Advanced Clinic Friday, 2) Danny Ching Beginner Clinic Sunday, 3) Paddle Fit Instructor certification and personal trainer instruction on Sunday.
The WB Biathlon is in 3 weeks!!!
On April 29th, throngs of bright-eyes Stand Up Paddle hopefuls will get an opportunity to learn how to SUP from one of the world’s best paddlers. Danny Ching, Riviera Team rider will be performing a beginner clinic teaching basic paddling skills to a group of paddling hopefuls.
This provides an incredible 1-2 punch for one of the US’s most popular events and compliments the Carolina Cup Advanced Racer Clinic with Anthony Vela and Candice Appleby on Friday, April 27 and Paddle Fit instructor and Personal Trainer Certification on Sunday, April 29th.
Registration will begin in a few days as the arrangements are stil being made. Packages are available through the Blockade Runner Beach Resort the official hotel and host of the 2012 Carolina Cup.

To kick off the 2012 season the WBPC organized the Carolina Cup, a non-profit race with 4 courses: a kids race, a recreational fun race, an open race and an elite race. The race raised money for Surfers Healing and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue Hospital in Topsail Island, NC in 2011. For 2012 we have added Athletes 4 Cancer to our tournament. A4C is focused on renewing, rebuilding, and restarting lives after cancer. These lives have been turned upside down physically and psychologically by cancer.
Were very excited to have a new location: The Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach, NC. We’re also planning a number of really fun events that will make this a true stand up paddle destination event. It’ll be one that you can plan a 3-day weekend and bring the family.

Chuck and Karen are giving two workshops in conjunction with the Carolina Cup. On Friday, April 29 2011 at 4:30, there will be an advanced paddle clinic for those seeking tips and refinements for the race the following day. On Sunday, May 1 at 9am, there is a Beginners Workshop for people who are just starting out and want to learn correct technique from two of the best paddlers on Earth.
Weather in Wrightsville Beach, NC: Beautiful. Sunny. High 60s. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. No waves at all. ESE 1 feet at 9 sec. I think we could find an inlet wave in the ext few days. It’s that mysterious weather pattern that says zero, but then a wave pops up at an inlet and 2 people are freaking out at how much fun it is and how no one is around.
You can paddle anywhere today. Flatwater, ocean, bathtubs. It’s going to be beautiful. Spring-like. Enjoy it. Usually we get slapped pretty hard when winter takes a break. It’s taken a really long break this year. Super clean. Super flat. Don’t be surprised if as the warmer air fills in that there is a SW wind later in the day. It’s never forecasted, but whammo.
For all of you who came to the WB Paddle Club meeting to talk about the Carolina Cup and a local race series, we’re meeting with the Blockade Runner beach Resort today to finalize a few things. Registration and the website will be up in the next day and there will be some great deals on accommodations at the Blockade Runner.
Hanohano Huki Ocean CHallenge results are on RADIO CHUM! They had 600+ paddlers to break the BOP record. It’s hard to believe. It must have been amazing. People are calling in updates.
Wow what a fun and crazy couple of weeks. Just recovering from Expo/Orange bowl to then take a whirlwind trip to NC for the 4th Annual Cold Stroke classic sup race adventure with team MHL!
Just getting there was a feat! We were traveling with 2 boards and connecting in Boston, then Raleigh (our only options to get our boards on flights that could handle the oversized bags) hop in a rental car and drive 2.5 hours to Wrightsville Beach which included a hwy stop to re-secure boards in wintry temps especially for us island people, then to be greeted in Wilmington by a wet behind the ears State trooper for speeding. Speed limit had just gone from 65mph to 45 and I was just slowing it down, but not quickly enough and had to throw on the “officer pleasssse i’ve never got a ticket before” with Nicholas Leason sitting in the passenger seat rocking out with his beanie and resin stained jeans trying not to laugh at my pathetic attempt to not get a ticket. The saving grace was the confusing Puerto Rican drivers license which made this officer look like a deer in headlights.. thankfully he waived us off with a “think you can slow it down Ma’am?” I replied, “Oh yes Sir, thank you Sir.”
After 12hrs of travel we checked into the Blockade Runner after midnight to wake up Saturday morning to 25-gusts to 40 mph winds. Thankfully it wasn’t freezing like previous years, but it was WINDY. They switched the 7.3 mile course around such that we had a KILLER 1mile downwinder but the rest of the 2 miles was upwind and at times we were not making any headway. I concentrated more on not falling in or getting blown off the board in the 50-degree waters rather than “racing”. Even with the mild temps, I could not feel my feet for the last half of the race, on top of paddling with full effort to just keep the board moving at times! The last half mile we had to cross the bay to the finish line in 30mph side wind chop which took every ounce of my strength and it felt more like I was paddling in “survival mode” rather than just finishing this extremely challenging race. With over 90 competitors out on the water testing their skills we saw a lot of boards flying away, folks kneeling and holding on to docks or resting on a bank, it was really wild out there and everyone that finished this race should be very proud of themselves!
After stowing the boards and just about to hit the hot tub it was announced the sprints were actually going to happen. How can you say no to another race after traveling an entire day to get here! We sprinted out about 100 ft to a buoy and back with a lot of bloopers and laughs. Two heats for the men and 1 for the ladies, although it was not a great turnout for this series it sure was entertaining to watch and participate!
We continued the NC adventure with fun, friends, awards, killer new North Face Jacket, sunglasses and a couple of checks! Nick and i were crowned King and Queen of the Cold stroke classic with the sprint wins and Nick also took 2nd overall and 2nd in the elite 14’ class and myself 1st in the woman’s 12’6. Was hoping to break the course record, but ended up just tying my time from last year which is quite impressive considering the wind and the fact that just finishing was something to be proud of! It was a blast showing off our mhl boards and seeing and hearing all of the positive feedback on all the ones that have been sent to NC. Following the awards and free beer we closed the weekend with some bull riding practice downtown and live music. This spring is the Carolina Cup Classic and to go with it a bull riding competition for the aspiring post race night owls. Get your tickets early for this one! We hit the road Sunday morning at O dark 30 back to Raleigh to catch our flights home. Great adventure and already planning the next Team MHL get away!

This is an quick OPEN MEETING for anyone-men and women- interested in establishing a local race series in Wilmington, starting with the Carolina Cup and ending with the Surf to Sound. We’re looking to do a race every two weeks on Thursday nights and involve all the shops, all levels, and some beginner classes or tips form the more advanced paddlers.
The Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club was set up to facilitate these races, specifically the Carolina Cup. We needed a way to collect entrance fees and pay the bills for the race. we want to expand the club to be able to handle this local series. We’d all participate. We want to keep the costs on all the races low and inclusive.
If you can stop by to give some input, get involved, please head over.
This is just an overview meeting. It doesn’t mean you have to take anything on. It’s just an open, who’s interested in a race series, what would make these the most fun, can anyone help to make this happen kind of meeting.
We got the dates wrong. The event will remain on April 27th to 29th. Sorry for the false alarm.
The Carolina Cup is one of the most popular stand up paddle board SUP races in the US. The event will be hosted at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach and is Organized by the Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club
