This two day event is for both traditional and stand up paddleboards. The feature event is on Saturday. It will be an 8.5 mile Elite division race awarding $4,000 in prize money; $3,000 for SUP divisions and $1,000 for traditional divisions.  There will also be a 2 mile Short Coarse Race. Awards ceremony will be held at Milliken’s Reef Restaurant, Port Canaveral, at 5pm.

Sunday will feature a short course sprint race for 10’6″ lifeguard class and 12’6″ SUP class paddleboards. Awards ceremony will be on the pool deck at the Doubletree Hilton at 1pm.

The race is being hosted by the DoubleTree by Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront. The DoubleTree has undergone complete renovation and faces directly on the beach. There is good surfing right in front with few crowds.

Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms, then a chance of a thunderstorm and a chance of rain in the afternoon. High of 77F. Winds from the NNW at 5 to 10 mph shifting to the NE in the afternoon. Chance of rain 60% with rainfall amounts near 0.3 in. possible.

I wanna give you a quick recap on this past weekend 15th annual key West Ward classic. I had an unreal time with my man, EJ Johnson at our clinic on Thursday. We had about 20 really amazing paddlers show up and EJ did awesome job passing on this knowledge and experience. It’s always an absolute pleasure working with my man, EJ.

Now Saturday was race day and mother nature showed up on queue to give us 20 to 25 mile per hour wind to make for a very challenging day on the water and well that being said, I was so impressed with both the 4 mile open and 12 mile elite finishers. You can find all the results posted @ KeyWestpaddleboardclassic.com, but just a quick shout out today to Heather Buas and Matt McDonald winners of both the men’s and women’s elite 12 mile race around sunny Key West, Florida.

And we also had a great awards ceremony and party at Smokin’ Joe’s both on the dane floor and on Duval Street afterwards. There were a lot of stories at the Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday morning—none of which I can talk about… ever.

So I would say that overall it was a very successful weekend and a  must-do event to put on your calendar for next year.

This weekend, I’m headed up to Jupiter, Florida for another sold out PaddleFit certification event. It’s always a fun weekend for me to see people get so excited about standup paddling, but I’m really asking for a little help from everyone reading this to send me some positive vibes so I can take a few personal days and head up to Jupiter early to do some training and I would absolutely love it if that training involved some waves. if those thoughts of perfect little waves produced some at the beach, it would be much appreciated.

Well, that does it for this week’s Westy Wednesday, a very successful Key West paddleboard Classic with just under 300 participants not including the clinic participants. That just shows you that our sport is still on the rise.

The start was wild. I was looking over to line myself up with everyone and then Aaron Napoleon said “go Jeremy go” and we were off. I never heard the horn but it was time to go. I caught a couple of big bumps right out of the gate and got out in front for a little while.

I couldn’t believe that I was in the lead! It was an awesome feeling but at the same time it was a scary feeling. I was trying not to panic and lose focus all while kinda being in a state of shock. I think that lasted for about 5 minutes and then guys started to pass me one by one.

First Dave, then Travis, Jamie, Connor, and Danny. I stayed close to that group for a while and they slowly opened up a gap on me as we got closer to the finish. The wind was getting lighter as we got closer to shore and Livio passed me with about 2 miles left then Kai and Kaaeo passed me once we came in over the reef.

I was stoked to make the top 10!

Lake Murray SUP Classic will be a WPA sanctioned event on the 22 Sept 2012.

This event will be benefiting Athletes4Cancer (www.Athletes4Cancer.org) and the Palmetto Health Foundation. A4C provides no cost Adventure Therapy Camps for cancer survivors, ages 15-55. Palmetto Health Foundation, Cancer Center will receive a percentage of the funds raised that will go towards travel costs for area patients to attend these camps. Please visit A4C website to learn more about this charity.

Venue: The SCE&G Lake Murray Public Park will have an area dedicated to the LMSUPC. The Park has plenty of parking, bathrooms, and course viewing spots for spectators.
Gates will be open by 8am. There is a Charity Run crossing the dam early Sept 22, 730am. But we expect no traffic problems.

A beginners – advance Clinic is being offered by WPA regional director and Instructor William Pope on Friday, Sept 21 at 6pm on the Irmo side of the dam. William will provide instuction for those wanting to start out in SUP or take some advanced instruction prior to the event. Cost of the clinic will be $25 pp but all funds will go directly to A4C.

The Race is sure to be a fast paced triangle type course that will test beginner paddlers and give advanced paddlers a chance to prove their skills on flat water.

The 5k race will be a triangle course with only 2 buoy turn at the far side of the dam and around the towers.This will be great race for those looking to start out in SUP or want to gather more race experience without swells or current.
The 10k race will be a similar route, but with 5 buoy turns that will allow paddlers to maximize their speed as both the 5k and 10k offer long straight lines.
The HSC will compete in the 5k race, starting at the same time but will be prized as a separate division.

The Race will consist of a 5k race for 12.6ft, 12.2ft and Under boards.
10k race, 12.6ft 14ft/Unlimited divisions.
Age categories will be dependant on the number of entries. 50+ and 18 & under.
All divisions will be open for men and women.
The 5k and 10k will be WPA sanctioned.

Inaddition, there is a High School Challenge race set to start off the day, ages 15-18. This race is open for 12ft and under boards only.

There will be Board Rentals available throught California Republic, Halfmoon Outfitters, River Runners, and WhiteCaps SUP. Contact us if you need more information.

ALL paddlers will be required to wear a PFD for this event

Prizes & Trophies – Prizes and Trophies will be given to the 5k & 10k races in both the 12.6 and 14ft divisions The unlimited division and 50+ will be awarded trophies. A prize will be awarded to the winner of the HSC courtesy of California Republic and trophies for 2nd and 3rd.

The newest outdoor beach craze is back in Richmond—Stand Up Paddleboard or SUP for short. Anyone that is up for the SUP Enduro challenge will have to paddle a total distance of 4.5km (2.7 miles) on the Haxall Canal.

VEPCO Levy off of Brown’s Island

In this single elimination, head to head Stand Up Paddle Board race down the James, heats of 4-5 competitors will battle it out to advance to the next round. Top two survivors move on until only four are left to compete in the championship heat. Spectators can enjoy the carnage – err competition – from the bridge to nowhere. The downriver race starts at the Brown’s Island rapid above the old VEPCO dam and drops through several significant holes in the VEPCO Levy rapids.

I don’t see any clouds. I don’t see any storms. The weather reports are 99% wrong.

There is a chest-high wave out there, but the south wind is chopping it up a little. It’s not as crazy as yesterday morning, but it has chop. I paddled around the south end jetty to Blockade Runner behind Big Mike and Glue yesterday morning, and the combination of outgoing tide, southeast swell and onshore winds made the inlet absolutely nuts. It was like a funhouse mirror. I took a few swims.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited fatal disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 70,000 children and young adults worldwide (30,000 domestically). The average life span for people with CF who live to adulthood is approximately 35 years.

What is Pipeline to a Cure?
The Pipeline to a Cure Campaign was created by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to herald the discovery by Australian researchers who found that CF patients that surfed and SUP’d had significantly healthier lungs. Doctors determined that inhaling saltwater mist has a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs, which allows CF patients to more easily eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus.

The Pipeline Campaign helps to raise awareness for the cause, leading to increased fundraising. Those funds are then invested on research to develop a cure to CF and for treatments to improve the quality of life of those afflicted. Additionally, the funding supports ongoing programs where CF patients are afforded the opportunity to participate in water sports.

NEXT, as a women’s swim and active wear brand, celebrates women who SUP, surf, and who genuinely love the water. When we learned of the Pipeline Campaign we were inspired to reach out in support. CF/Pipeline encourages people who are afflicted to SUP, surf, etc.—the same activities which our NEXT customer embraces.
