SAN DIEGO — Catching a wave can do more than give you a paddling workout. It also boosts mood, according to a new study.
The results show going surfing for 30 minutes is associated with an increase in positive, upbeat feelings and a decrease in negative feelings as well as fatigue.
While the study was conducted on a general surfing population, the findings were true regardless of how frequently people surfed, how old they were and what their skill level was.
The results might not come as a surprise to those who surf.
“If you ask any surfer, he or she guaranteed will tell you, ‘Oh man, I feel a lot better after I get out,’” said study researcher Ryan Pittsinger, a doctoral student at the University of Iowa and a surfer himself.

I just had the permit approved by the Town of Wrightsville Beach. Sat, July 24th. The 1st Annual Mullet Run will be a Battle of the Paddle-Style race (Note, this is not an actual Battle of the Paddle) with competitors paddling out through the surf, around 2 bouys, in through the surf, run around a pole, then around 1 more time. There will be a downwind section. The event will raise $ for Surfers Healing, a charity I love. Sponsorships opportunities are available. Please send cash. Kidding.
There will be mens and womens 12’6″ race division and a surf division, a run-what-ya-brung surf SUPs.
I’m waiting on the Coast Guard, so I won’t be releasing the poster/flyer, etc. just yet, but save the date. I’m also applying to the WPA for this to be included in the points series.
Prizes and prize $ TBD. There will be a pig pickin’ and festivities after as well as a used SUP flea market.
Things are heating up. More details to come.
John

We’re going to find new breaks. It’s a moral imperative. On standups, well be able to hit waves in places we’ve never considered. Waves we looked at on our longboards and said, “If I could find the lineup and time it right, I could get one out there some day.” Well, some day is now. You have the range to try. You have the ability to get in early. And once we start finding these places, it’s all gravy.
From Chris Curry:
Just a heads up, Todd and I caught the Shoals at Masonboro yesterday really good (Possible Peak & Breakname: On the Rocks!). 1.5 – 2 minute rides easily video tells all! But I think I will keep these on the down – just for the Distressed Mullet’s viewing right now. Wait until we get a tropical storm or hurricane – 4 -5 minutes of riding a single wave is my guess. Leg and Chest burn is all I can say when that day comes!
Check out Justin’s head. Holy crap. Hes been so stoked on learning to SUP. He’s a good surfer from CB and has been surfing for a LONG TIME.
With his new board, he got into the shore break, and his new Subvector tattooed him. Dang. Heal up!
For those of you new to SUP surfing, remember that the board is significantly bigger than what you’ve been surfing. Keeping control over your board is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT—especially in off-shore wind conditions and around other people. WEAR A LEASH. When you fall, Cover your melon with your arms. And finally, this is my rule and is, SURF LIKE YOU HAVE NO LEASH! Even know you need a leash. This will give you the ultimate awareness over where your board is.
This is from Justin:
Here you go John….
Surfing 9’3 C4 Subvec near Ft Fisher. Shallow shore break where they just dredged….wind switched to the south….got real choppy and had a nice spill. I was by myself.
Hit a fin, big laceration. Eleven staples across my head. Kudos to CB Emergency Clinic for taking me in right away….helps he surfs too.
Have to stay out of water for 10 days…risk of infection, especially b/c of the dredging. Staples get removed in 14 days, and hopefully that will be it.
I will be getting a helmet http://www.murrays.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=52-15&Category_Code=&Store_Code=MS
Be safe, ride with a partner if possible. Attached is a picture of the doctor doing his work….
Wish I could have been out there with you. Feeling better. Maybe tomorrow.

Race route 2
Still in SC. Going to miss the biathlon. Get out there and paddle until you get the runs!!! I mean get to run. hate it when that happens. James, kill it. Chris, kill it. Jason, watch peacefully from the beach. I’ll be home later tonight. Maybe we can all get some waves tomorrow…
Here it is:
From Mark Colino:
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I was able to pull-off living 6 months of the year at the beach and 6 months in the Rocky Mountains. And surprisingly, I learned an important lesson about SUP wave riding while I was in the mountains.
I was fortunate enough to meet Olympic bronze medal slalom skier Jimmy Heuga. He politely answered questions from my friend Tom and I on a range of topics from training to competing in and representing our country in the Olympics. Then he did something that surprised both of us. He invited us to meet up and ski with him. You see, Jimmy was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) shortly after the 1964 Olympic Games, and now needed to use two canes to get around.
The big day arrived and Tom and I did not know what to expect. Jimmy led the way down on that first run and after 100 yards or so my perception of what it takes to perform at a world class level changed forever. The man was smooth as silk. Like water flowing downstream naturally. All this from someone who had lost use of most of his muscles!
Were all those hours in the gym, on the bike and paddling, building muscle for naught? We pressed him for words of wisdom. Jimmy explained that without muscle mass it becomes critical to rely on your skeletal structure and body position to form angles to achieve leverage.
So how does this apply to SUP surfing? Even small SUP’s are 9’3” and very thick and wide. Forming correct body angles and using the paddle are critical for those of us who are not built like Laird. Watch video of Rob Machado or Gerry Lopez riding a SUP. I would be surprised if either one was over 150 pounds dripping wet. Yet they position their body, board and paddle in ways that result in great turns!
Of course being a CPT (certified paddle board trainer) I encourage people to build up their muscular endurance, but I stress that it does not replace proper technique! Have a friend video your next session and make note of the angles and position of knees, back, arms, paddle etc… when you nail a good turn and compare it to one that’s not so good.
Now put down those dumbbells and go out and lay into some carves!
Mark Colino is the East Coast Starboard rep and runs “Stand Strong” stand up paddle board lessons and fitness programs throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties, New Jersey
I spoke to Jeremy and he said he just got through three of the best days of surfing in a row that he’s ever had in his life. Apparently they enjoyed 10-15 foot Hawaiin and glassy. I can’t even fathom it. Nuts. He sent me photos from an unidentified break, never to be revealed. One funny thing he said was that he and Dave were wearing their GPS watches to see how fast they were going on these waves and he hit 24.3 mph. Holy crap.
He says he’s riding a new Naish 9’0″ that he loves. I’ll have to find out what model. I don’t know if it’s one of the Nalu, Manu or Hokua Series, but he says it’s awesome. I’ll get more details.
