We have been going non stop since July 28th, when we disembarked to Utah on the 700mi hi-way trek to theH20 OverDrive SUP Cup in Park City. at Jordanelle Reservoir in our 2003 custom EJ built Freight Liner Sprinter van.
It’s called the luchador lockdown. I’ve paid. That means I’m going. It’s done. Get your tights out, put on your cape and mask, grab your wallet and register. This will be a blast. Register here: active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1882806
In every sport, there are a lot of things to remember in terms of preparation and technique. It’s no different with Stand Up Paddle racing. Let’s cover just the basics without too much detail…
Eat right – stayed away from sweets (I miss you ice cream…please come back to me), cut down on the beers, and start carb’ing up starting a few days before the race. I also did other things like vitamin and protein supplements.
Cross train (mostly biking/mtn biking) to work different muscles and the heart/lungs for any type race much less racing in higher altitude (6200 ft at Lake Tahoe).
Betsy, Bob, Mac, EJ, Andi, everyone! Have a great race and a great weekend. Wish I was there. Send me results and photos so I can spread the love. Ernie—sorry I couldn’t be there. They have this thing called cash that seems to elude me at times. I’ll start collecting it from the tree out back and catch you next time.
I had a friend ask me for advice on how to start or run an SUP event. I’ve only run a single event and I can tell you it’s a tough job, but the payoff is enormous. And in a growing sport, you are building a foundation, acting as ambassadors, and spreading the stoke. Here is my advice:
Just do it. The only way to learn is to go for it.
Set up registration through Active.com.
List it on Distressedmullet.com, Standupzone, register the event with the WPA and Byron Kurt/Scott Sanchez. List on Goya events, and the Eaton Site.
If you need timing software, the WPA has a cool system
Pick up a sponsor like Goya, Hobie, Starboard, Tahoe SUP, Werner, Kialoa, H2O Overdrive, Yolo, Naish, etc.—any company who supports races, can offer prizes, and who has a shop in the area that can benefit from the exposure.
Get local press coverage in advance of the event. Just call or make a press release. Email them. Sponsors with an active PR department can really help.
Make it fun. Remember that this is a group of people getting together to enjoy a sport they love, or want to learn. The tone has to be fun. If you run around like a chicken with your head cut off, the tone will trickle down to the competitors.
Have results ready after the race.People want to know their times and placement. It’s like a 5K in that respect. You want to know how you did.
Don’t over-represent prizes or free items. Let those be a bonus.
Don’t freak out.
Have first aid available
Get all your permits 3 months in advance—the day before is cutting it close
Make a family rate for people who want to have their kids participate
Have an area to sign up for the WPA
Have an area to sign the petitions for a change in the PFD laws
Make COOL t-shirts.
Have a kids element if possible.
Follow all the laws.
Give people the option to donate to charity above and beyond their entrance fee or shirts—a pass the bucket works great
Get insurance.
Make an event on Facebook and invite your friends.
Make the start, finish and the course easy to do for beginners and a longer or more difficult course for more advanced paddlers—maybe an extra lap.
Make the prize distribution make sense. The rec paddlers shouldn’t win a $1400 board when the elite paddlers are battling over $500. It’ll make people run the rec division instead.
Rec=fun. Elite=competitive freaks.
Have all the divisions—stock, 14 and unlimited. They are different boards and even if there is only one competitor, it’s a start.
If you are offering $, offer it in both 12’6″ stock and 14′ divisions.
Be flexible with the course. Conditions can change in a heartbeat. If things are too difficult for beginners, you might be discouraging them from entering the sport. Even in the Elite race, there should be at least one reward for every soul-crushingly difficult section. Also, if things are difficult, you can relax some of the rules for the rec division, like allowing knee-paddling to get out through surf.
Make hotel arrangements for people traveling in.
Provide directions to the event.
Let people know ahead of time if they will have to pay for parking, entrance to the beach, etc. Hidden fees suck.
You don’t have to do everything for everyone.
Pick a local charity and do some good.
Hold a beach sweep after the event—keep your playground clean.
Invite everyone, even business competitors—it is a community first
Do the right thing
If you want it to be big, bring in a pro and give people access to them.
Put on a workshop to teach technique
Don’t grip so tight that you strangle your own event
Be clear on the rules. Emphasize self-governance. This is a gentleman’s sport. If you break a rule, you need to take yourself out. The race director should be clear on this.
There is letter of the law and the spirit of the law. I suggest spirit of the law.
Keep chase boats out of the way and keep them parked at specific spots unless needed. The wake can wreak havoc and competitors can ride the lead boat ahead of the whole pack. It’s fun when it happens, but usually the boat has no idea they’re in the way or making things tough.
Get a group shot before the race.
Post photos on Facebook or Flickr so people can show their friends how much fun they had.
Really try to get the timing correct—one great idea is to post the UNOFFICIAL results at the end of the race. The competitors usually know where they came in and can pick out any errors before the OFFICIAL results come out, and before trophies or prizes are released.
Do you best and do everything for the right reasons and you can’t go really wrong. You can and will make mistakes, but at least they’ll be in the interest of fun and good.
Be original. Be real.
Beer chaser
This is an incomplete list. The races I’ve attended are all trailblazers. They stuck their necks out to arrange these events and did amazing jobs. Even when things went off somewhere, they stepped up to make it right. Add to this in the discussion.
Good luck everyone in today’s SEA NYC race. Saw the whole crew last night at check in. The SEA people have busted their ass to make this happen and it looks like the weather is goign to be wonderful. It’s 68 degrees. It’ll only get to 79. Can’t wait. I’m drinking coconut water and staring at my gear. So much crap. Can’t bring it all.
2010 CCBC is ON!
The training is done…..watching the weather…almost…looks like a light east wind will increase the challenge a bit.
We have 44 paddlers making the crossing this year and we are pushing to beat last years average of $1,500/paddler. If you can, please consider giving to the cause. The kids and families that come to Boston for cancer treatment at MGH really need the support that Christopher’s Haven provides. The easiest way to give is with my firstgiving donation page. http://www.facebook.com/l/aa344v5WpqRJPWnrm2Lz9M9EB-Q;www.firstgiving.com/robertbabcock
Hope we see some…or all..of you at the pre and/or post parties….pre-party at the Cabby Shack in Plymouth…Friday late aftrenoon/evening, post-party Saturday, 2:00 pm at the Suirf Club in P’town. Raffles for artwork, gear, and more including a chance at a new naish glide standup board.

I can’t believe it’s in 4 days. Friday the 13th. I’m packing up my stuff. My GoPro case broke. i don’t have time to grab a replacement door, so I’ll need to borrow one. I had the 14′ Ohana out for the 2nd time today and tried out my Kialoa Methane, which is the perfect name for my paddle considering all the vegetables I’ve been eating.
Had my Hep B shot and a tetanus. Also packing a butterfly knife because even the butterflies are bad ass up there. The rats run in formation. The paddlers and cockroaches are the only ones you can trust.
I took the Ohana out for the 2nd time today. It’s super fast. It’ll take a little bit to dial in, but I have 28 miles. Michael Metzger thinks I’ll have it dialed in by mile 16. Unfortunately, that’s the HarlemRiver, the dirties water on Earth. And also the coolest view of both old and new Yankee Stadiums. It’s awesome, unless you look into the brown abyss, floating condoms, snack wrappers, hot dogs, and latex gloves (without hands). It’s disturbing.
There will be current at start and finish… it should be interesting. The wind is the variable. Currents are insane. Ferry boats don’t give a rats ass about paddlers. Then, there’s that giant underwater intake fan at 140th street. Oh Joy! UNDERWATER INTAKE FAN!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
Stay in the channel, avoid barges and ferries. Do not approach the shore—especially on the East River. The currents undercut the shore in places, deliberately trying to pull you under the city. Actually, this is all dramatic, but the really technical places are at the start until about 56th Street, Hell Gate, then the end, from the Williamsburg Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge. The rest is gravy. Literally, gravy. And by the way, it’s life-changing and I wouldn’t miss it for the world (this year). and the Hudson is clean and beautiful.
At Werner Paddles we promote the philosophy of using a light grip while paddling. We believe a light grip minimizes fatigue of the hands, arms, and joints, and over time will reduce the potential of developing carpal tunnel or tendonitis. We strongly believe the ability to use a light grip lies in combining a well designed paddle with the right paddle choice to fit your individual needs. Visit our PADDLE FIT GUIDE.
There are several factors that may cause a paddler to over-grip the shaft. To name just a few, over-gripping may be a subconscious effort to control a blade that flutters or torques in your hand. It may also be caused by the effort needed to hold a shaft that is too large and/or simply that the paddle is not a good fit.
Werner Paddles’ advanced blades and shafts incorporate carefully designed features that create a smooth and stable stroke so a paddler can lightly grip the shaft while pulling the blade easily through the water. To get a good fitting paddle Werner offers several blade and shaft choices at no additional charge.
We encourage you to understand the importance of choosing the right paddle.
For more information on choosing a good fitting paddle please refer to our PADDLE FIT GUIDE.
For more information on how our design features work to provide a smooth and stable stroke please refer to our Design page.

Hey guys,
Wanted to send you a link to check out My Local Lineup where they picked up our post-race blog post from Deanwatersports.blogspot.com, PLUS video + pics!
John, thought this would be cool to share with your friends in Wilmington.
Great video, Dave. Thanks again!
We had a great day at the lake yesterday, immersing ourselves in board porn. If you didn’t see the chamo unlimited board, it’s because it’s CHAMO. Riggs Napoleon was on it for a while.
Laird showed up. He’s not of our human species. He’s much bigger than I thought. MUCH BIGGER. He seemed like a really nice guy, but I didn’t meet him. To many people.
I did, however, meet Mickey Munós. If you haven’t seen Chasing Dora, watch it. Mickey is the embodiment of pure stoke. I don’t know how else to accurately describe him. You will not find a friendlier guy.
We’re having coffee and getting ready to head to the expo. Will post photos… there are hundreds I need to sort through.

Racer TL
This Racer is part of our “TL” (Tommy Lloy) signature series SUP’s and is collaboration between team rider Tommy Lloy and Steve Boehne. They’ve worked meticulously on speed rockers, water displacement, exit drag, and stability to make this SUP slippery fast and stable. Tommy’s signature raceboard offers a slightly wider template and shallower cockpit to aid in “gripping” with your toes in choppy open ocean conditions. The displacement bottom has a slightly wider underbelly to help the med – larger sized (180lbs +) paddler be stable and fast! Tommy is 200lbs and is lightning fast on his 12’6″ RacerTL. http://www.infinitysurf.com/permanent-site-content/boards-sup-models/the-racertl.html
The RacerTL
The CarverTL
This Carver is part of our “TL” (Tommy Lloy) signature series SUP’s. Team rider Tommy Lloy is regarded as one of the best SUP surfers on the planet. Infinity has developed a model based around Tommy’s needs in a high-performance SUP. This Carver is based off of our highly touted “Carver” performance SUP. Tommy’s version has a special rocker and fin placement for lightning speed and aggressive turns off the tail. The nose has a specific template to nose ride, which suits Tommy’s all around surfing approach. If you are serious about performance SUP surfing, there is no need to look anywhere else. Tommy is 200lbs and rides the CarverTL at 8’5″. http://www.infinitysurf.com/permanent-site-content/boards-sup-models/the-carvertl.html
