Maliko Video from Ke Nalu

Another cool post from Bill Boyum–some video he shot of his friends Jason and Campbell on a typical Maliko day. This is one of the best camera angles I’ve seen. Maybe Bill can get some good video on a big day. It would be nice to have some Maliko shots that actually look representative.

Congrats Maui Mullet, Jeremy Riggs—1st in 14′ class in Maui Brewing Co North Shore Challenge

Jeremy Riggs continued doing well on Maui (Maliko run), riding for Naish and taking 1st in 14′ (no rudder) class in Maui Brewing Co North Shore Challenge. Jeremy sent me his Garmin data for the race. Check out the speeds! Are you kidding me? Congrats Jeremy and Naish.

Slow down to speed up—Dake Kalama

Slow down to speed up—From Dave Kalama’s Blog:

Published: March 13, 2010

I know, what the hell is that supposed to mean, slow down to speed up. A few years ago I stumbled up an interesting discovery when training for a really long OC-1 paddle approx. 250 mi.. At that distance your pacing becomes one of the most critical factors in your success, besides hydration, nutrition and rash control. Part of learning to pace for that distance is being really, really efficient. Which means maximizing absolutely every glide. How do you maximize every glide? By learning to read every bump in the water that’s within 30 yards of you and your craft. In fighter pilot terms, everything in your 7:30 to 4:30 radius.

10 tips for Stand Up Paddle surfing for the first time

These are small tips, not huge tips. I’m not a pro, but I’ve been listening and living and showing up to races and breaks. If just one of you gets stoked on the sport without pissing off the entire surfing world, then happy, happy.

Here you go:

1. If you’ve never surfed, learn the etiquette, the rules that apply to surfers.
When you enter a lineup (the area where a group of surfers ride waves), there are rules that apply to everyone. They were established in different ways, in different places, to keep people safe and having fun. Nothing gives SUP a worse name than people who paddle out and break these rules. It’s like someone buying a car and ignoring traffic laws. People can get angry, hurt, or worse. Here is a link to a forum post. Ask questions there and people will try to answer them.

This is the first and most important step. Don’t go to step 2 until you’ve read and understood the importance of surf etiquette.

From Dukey

From Dukey. Looks like they’re making the best out of that cold, winter N wind.

What do you do when it’s the second day of the new year, 30 degrees out, the wind is blowing at 25mph and gusting over 35 (Wind Chill 20-ish)? You call a couple of crazy friends, bust out the 12 foot PSH Gun and take it downwind!!! That’s what!

Trying to pull the Gun in to a ripping ankle-breaker!

Our hands and feet were a bit nipped but our Xcel suits kept us warm and it was well worth it…frozen grins!
Walt and Rob got the “Darn Tough” award and a pair of socks each by the same name.
I have more to give away to any souls that come out and brave the winter water with me.

Hat’s off to Anne for braving the wind and cold to take a couple of shots of us as we were playing in the waves at the end of the paddle!
She has a whole quiver of Darn Toughs already.

Aloha nui loa and Hauoli Makahiki Hou,

David Spencer’s Visor Cam Prototype

This is the housing and mount for GoPro cameras. I got the HD version a few weeks before Christmas and was fortunate enough to have MacGyver as a friend.

It uses the GoPro mount and has a leash to attach to your wetsuit. It works well. You have to find the right angle to capture the scene, but this works great.

Keep in mind, this is a first-generation prototype. The next version will be more polished and we’ll work through some initial weight, leash, and fit issues.

A Distressed Mullet version will be available for sale in a few weeks. Let me know if you are interested. john@distressedmullet.com

Photos of the new and improved visor cam will be up as soon as we build it and get it production-ready.

Go Pro Experiment #3: The learning curve is steep and aggressive

I never thought I’d admit this, but my stellar middle-school athletic career didn’t prepare me for the conditions today. Chris Hill and I did an ocean downwinder from North Topsail to the Surf City pier. NE winds started at 10-15, quickly hitting 25+. Waves that were chest high when we paddled out, were overhead on sets by the end. Chris smoked me. He was flying. I can only wonder how fast Jason would have been. Or how James’ F16 would have eaten that run up.

There were swells from three directions. If you were on one, connecting runners, you were fine. If not, you were spinning like a top, stalling, then shooting forward. I was inconsistent at best. I’d hit the offshore swell, running out, then turn for the NE waves on the sets and take a huge drop. I pearled. I fell off the sides, the back, the front. Some moves were straight-up circus tricks. Others, were kook-central. I wish I could say there was something I kept doing, but there wasn’t. But just when I’d get slammed sideways, I’d hop up and hit 3, 4, or 5 runners in a row and feel like I was flying. Then, I’d flip sideways, the board would blow over my head and I’d be pulling my leash, catching up to my board.

GoPro HD Downwinder test run

I tried out the new GoPro HD with David Spencer’s visor cam today. 12 miles from CB to WB. ESE winds at 10-20. Not perfect, but fun. Had some small but nice runners. Riding my 14′ Ron House race board. William Pope cruised on his 12’6″ Hobie CR-1. It was rainign and cold, but a good paddle nevertheless.

Here’s the route. It’s 12 miles exactly, dock to dock.. It took us 2:40.

http://www.mapmyrun.com

It’s easy and a good guestimate of how far you’re going. It works like Google maps. Map new run at the top and go….

So… if you were wondering how far it was from say… Snow’s Cut Bridge to Trail’s End, you could got there and find out it’s around 7.5 miles (Big Jim?)

Fastest 12’6″ board on Earth is sitting at Sidearm

I don’t know if anyone’s been paying attention, but Michael Owens sent one of his custom hollow-hull boards—the same model as the one he used while sweeping every event in this area—to Sidearm. I think it’s around $1550, but holy crap, someone better jump on this if they want to compete locally. It’s fast, it surfs, and on downwinders, you’re not going to find a faster 12’6″ and under. I was shocked to see it on the rack when I stopped by this afternoon. Seriously: Sidearm: 910-686-2969

If you really want to get in the game, this is the board.

Anyone for a downwinder on Sunday?

Anyone up for a Sunday Mase downwinder? We have NE winds at 10-20.
High Tide is at 9:17 am on Sunday. We can drop a car south and drive to Harbor Island. The outgoing tide will take us right out of the inlet (or we can walk across—the jetty sucks), paddle open ocean to CB.

7:30 at Jimbo’s on College for Breakfast (cheap!)
8:30 drop off car south
9:00 drive to WB and park
9:30 launch
11:00-12 finish
Any takers?
