Two German SUP’ers Die in Flooded River | News | Stand Up Paddle

BAVARIA, Germany – Thursday evening, September 2, 2010, saw the tragic death of experienced standup paddlers on the Mangfall River near Munich, in Bavaria Germany. The two paddlers, Marcus Steininger and Nils Hornischer, decided to go for a quick evening paddle after work on a section of river that they knew well. The river was unusually high, and they were washed downstream quickly and over a low head dam. Trapped in the hydraulic at the dam’s base, the two men drowned. Both were equipped with life jackets, helmets and leashes (which ties the paddler to his board for quick recovery after a fall).

Infinity Race Team killing it in Rhode Island

Race Team in Rhode Island

Dave Boehne, Tommy Lloy and Jason Kenworthy headed out last weekend to Rhode Island for the 1st Annual Newport SUP Cup race presented by Coastal Urge…

We had a great showing and winning results on the new Infinity x Aviso 13.5lb Racer! All the guys raced this board into some nice results:

Tommy Lloy 1st Place Elite

Jason Kenworthy 2nd Place Elite

Dave Boehne 2nd Place Open

After the race we hung out for a bit to check out what Rhode Island had to offer… Great scenic paddles and we scored some fun hurricane swell!

Waterman’s Journal—Dave Kalama—Sequencing

Why do really good paddlers seem like they use less energy but go faster? Because they can sequence their coordinated movements into a efficient continually flowing series of executed moves. For every movement you have a set of muscles that enable you to make that movement, but you also have a set of muscles to do the opposite. Quite simply, a set to push and a set to pull. Which means if you don’t coordinate the firing of those muscles you could potentially be pushing and pulling at the same time, which means you’re fighting yourself (not efficient).

Eric Stearns ran away with 1st place in the open race on his new 14-0 open ocean racer to start off the events. Rob Rojas came in 2nd place in the elite and followed it up with a 1st in the long distance event. Stearns’ performance was very recognized with a 3rd place overall on his 14-0 behind the respected Chuck Patterson and Rob Rojas. Great job guys, incredible representation. Russell and Thomas “Maximus” failed to make the event after automobile troubles . . . blown motor . . . when they entered the high desert. Towed back to San Clemente.

Latest on Earl—look out VA-NY

You better hold on East Coast—especially OBX, VA, MD, and NJ—seriously. We’re psyched about the waves, but be careful. Looks like it’s a Cat 4. Buy white bread and milk. That’s what everyone here buys for some reason.

HurricaneTrack.com- Hurricane Tracking, News, Information and Live Rporting

Hurricane Earl is now passing just to the north of Anguilla on its way WNW towards the northern extent of the British Virgin Islands. With a little luck, the core should pass north of the remaining islands- including Puerto Rico. However, strong rain bands are passing over the entire region, making for a rough Monday for sure. Earl is now just on the fence of being a category three hurricane. Weather conditions will improve tomorrow but then there is the next system to watch for. More on that in a moment.

Once past the northern Caribbean Sea, Earl will continue on its WNW path while under the influence of the high pressure area over the west-central Atlantic (Bermuda High as most people know it). Because the high is not large and does not extend over in to the Southeast, Earl cannot continue on its current path without turning more north. It is this turn to the north and when it happens that holds the key to who feels what effects from the Carolinas to Nova Scotia. A turn soon enough keep almost all the rough weather well offshore. A turn later or more broad would mean hurricane conditions could scrape the extreme eastern portions of North Carolina, Cape Cod and eventually Nova Scotia. Obviously, any more of a track west would result in a significant hurricane landfall in North Carolina to points north. What are the odds that the worst case here could happen? Just by going on the latest computer models, it would seem unlikely that Earl would get to 76 or 77 west longitude by 34 to 35 north latitude before the turn to the east. While a majority of the computer models show it remaining off shore, some of the so-called ensemble runs indicate a landfall. Ensemble models are runs of the computer models with slighly different variables to affect the final outcome. Think of them as “what if” models. What if the high were stronger to the east? What if the hurricane tracks more west now and turns north later? Those kinds of variables but not quite that simple. In any case, there is a chance that Earl passes close enough to the coast, especially the North Carolina coast first, to bring hurricane conditions. The NHC reminds us on their latest discussion that four and five day track forecast errors can be as much as 300 miles! Let’s assume for moment that the average error was only 150 miles at days four and five. If they were off too far east, and Earl were 150 miles west of this morning’s forecast plot, then Earl is sitting over extreme eastern North Carolina and from there, it could easily track over Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts and even Maine. It’s that angle of turn that will be so critical. Right now, it favors a “wow, that was close” scenario but still has room for a more significant impact. I wish we had better answers but when they run up the coast like this, any subtle changes in track can have huge consequences later on. As far as intensity, Earl could easily become a category four hurricane as it moves over warmer and warmer water and experiences very favorable conditions aloft. There is good news in that Earl should weaken some as it turns north- how much and how soon remains to be seen. Once again, very dangerous ocean swells along with rip currents will be prevalent along portions of the East Coast. Surfers will continue to enjoy phenomenal wave action but average swimmers need to pretty much stay very close to shore. I expect a bevy of coastal advisories to come out over the next several days.

Tension mounts as the Mormaii Ibiraquera Wave Contest approaches

With just over 2 weeks remaining until stop number 4 of the Stand Up World Tour, that will take place in Ibiraquera, South Brazil, tension is mounting: this is a crucial stop for the overall world rankings for 2010, as all athletes will be given a discard after this event, thereby dropping their worst result.

This means that a good result is all the more important here in Brazil and that their will without doubt be a shift in the World Rankings following this event and leading into the Finals in California.

Clinical Data—SURF study results released—”Need a mood lift? Grab a surfboard”

SAN DIEGO — Catching a wave can do more than give you a paddling workout. It also boosts mood, according to a new study.

The results show going surfing for 30 minutes is associated with an increase in positive, upbeat feelings and a decrease in negative feelings as well as fatigue.

While the study was conducted on a general surfing population, the findings were true regardless of how frequently people surfed, how old they were and what their skill level was.

The results might not come as a surprise to those who surf.

“If you ask any surfer, he or she guaranteed will tell you, ‘Oh man, I feel a lot better after I get out,’” said study researcher Ryan Pittsinger, a doctoral student at the University of Iowa and a surfer himself.

Insight about “Me my Shark and I” « Chuck Patterson’s Blog

This is a GREAT article following up on the video from Chuck Patterson where he was visited by a great white while surfing San Onofre.. I posted the video here: http://distressedmullet.com/?video=me-my-shark-and-i-my-gopro-video-by-chuck-patterson

From Chuck’s Blog, http://chuckpattersonsports.wordpress.com

I have been stand up paddling for the last 5 years traveling the world chasing waves, paddling long distance ocean channels and coastlines and racing. The sport of stand up paddling gives you such a great view of marine life as you stand on top of your board paddling through the oceans and lakes. I think that is one of the most intriguing beauties that makes stand up paddling so inviting. “You are your own captain of your ship, exploring the waters of the world”.

Ever since I have been stand up paddling, I have witnessed some unbelievable moments of mother Natures creations paddling in the ocean. I have had a Blue whale breech in front of me, startled a huge Marlin sunning itself on the surface, paddled along side dolphins, Grey whales, Whale sharks, Thresher and Mako sharks and in the last 2 years several Great White encounters.

Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine – First Sanctioned Stand Up Paddle Based Fitness Program

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Brody Welte of Stand Up Fitness is proud to announce that “Paddle Fit” is the first-ever Stand Up Paddle-based fitness program to be sanctioned by the American Council on Exercise. Paddle Fit is an all-encompassing fitness program that consists of a complete physical assessment, group and personal training classes, thorough Stand Up Paddle training, SUP race training and land-based supplemental training.

“To be recognized by ACE is huge,” said Welte. “We have always promoted the natural core-enhancing workout that you get from Stand Up Paddling, but this program really shows the ultimate fitness potential of the sport. Add that to the fact Stand Up Paddling is fun and very easy to learn, and you have a fitness program that almost anyone will really enjoy.”

Paddle Fit was developed through a culmination of more than a decade of experience in personal fitness training and Stand Up Paddling. Welte’s fitness training experience includes training with renowned professional athletic trainer Todd Durkin (trainer for 2-time Olympic gold medal winning snowboarder Shaun White and National Football League Pro Bowlers Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson). Welte also trained and partnered with Hawaiian “Big Wave Surfer” Dave Kalama, a champion Stand Up Paddler who is proclaimed to be the world’s greatest waterman.

Feeling the Stoke of SEA Paddle NYC « Flourish Design Photos

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

~Margaret Mead

I hesitate using the term, “wrapping my head around” in one of my blogs again, but that is exactly what I am trying to do—wrap my head around the incredible 28 mile journey around Manhattan for autism and the environment that is SEA Paddle NYC. I have never been more proud to be a stand up paddler, a “water woman,” an athlete, or a human being.

Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.

~Ryunosuke Satoro

Sitting out in the prayer circle the morning before the paddle start, you could feel the power of that ocean as it was about to be unleashed into the mighty Hudson. Professional surfers, financial analysts, salesmen and yes, maybe even a graphic designer or two crawled out from behind their desks, trekked from one coast or another to get to New York City and paddle for the cause. One participant even SUP’ed 1500 miles to get there. Close to 150 athletes collectively raised over $260,000, paddling for many grueling hours and making a difference in the lives of children and families dealing with autism.

ESA Article—BIG APPLE, BIGGER HEARTS: 4th Annual SEA Paddle NYC Provides Best Opportunity Yet To Help Environment, Autistic Kids

When members of an army of about 150 paddleboarders lug their multi-colored watercraft through the streets of New York City this Friday, August 13th, they may get a few strange looks. And when their flotilla cruises along the city’s waterways, past some of its most famed landmarks, a few puzzled onlookers might stop to whisper in disbelief. But in a city that has endured more than its fair share of oddities, chances are that the 4th Annual SEA Paddle NYC will not be the strangest event that the Big Apple’s citizens have ever witnessed. However, it may very well be one of the most inspiring.

The SEA Paddle NYC, a 28-mile charity paddle around Manhattan organized by the Surfers Environmental Alliance (SEA), has quickly become a much anticipated summer event for paddleboarders and surfers alike. Participants must each raise at least $1,000 in order to join the event, and proceeds from the paddle benefit eight different autism charities, as well as the environmental goals of SEA.

Surfers and watermen from around the world, including legends like Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Darrick Doerner, Garrett McNamara, and Joel Tudor, have all been hooked by the event’s positive vibe, and this year’s addition of an Elite Paddle Race category, with up to $3,000 worth of prize money going to the winners, has also brought paddleboard hotshots like Slater Trout, Candice Appleby, and nine-time Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard Race champion Jamie Mitchell to the city.

But regardless of whether they’re world-class athletes or recreational adventure seekers, all the paddle participants say that the real reason to join is for the pure stoke of the event. “This is my third year doing the paddle, and I’m always really excited to be a part of it,” says New Jersey surfer and meteorologist James Gregorio. “It’s one of the highlights of the summer for me. Paddling around the most famous city in the world and seeing all these iconic landmarks from a completely different perspective is truly amazing, and all the money from this event is put to great use.”

John Beausang, a North Carolina paddleboarder and founder of the blog www.DistressedMullet.com, will be joining the paddle for the second time, and he says that as a member of the Cape Fear chapter of Surfers Healing, he has witnessed the impact that funds raised by the event can have. Surfers Healing, one of the beneficiaries of the SEA Paddle NYC, provides relief to autistic children by teaching them to surf, and Beausang says that with the extra funds donated by the paddle, Surfers Healing is able to offer its magical surf camp experience to even more children.

“It’s at least one day in these kids’ lives where they’re not the exception,” he says. “All the kids and parents at the camps are going through the same things, so the kids get to just relax and connect with the ocean through surfing. To see the stoke on their faces is a truly amazing thing.”

Beausang also says that supporting the SEA Paddle NYC’s other important goal, protecting the environment, should be as logical as “taking care of your playground.” Andrew Mencinsky, executive director of SEA, believes that’s exactly what his organization is doing, and although the correlation between environmental protection and autism awareness might not seem obvious at fist, Mencinsky says that hosting an event to benefit both causes was actually a very natural fit.

Kalama Blog> Dealing With White Water

I’ve been thinking about this some more since writing this tip and have a couple more things that might help. The advice I gave is good for when you want to try and get over the white water, but what about when it’s to big and you can’t. I basically have three options to choose from. Options one and two are the ones I use the most.

Option one, approach the wave as if you were going to try and get over it, but at the last moment before impact prepare to shoot the board up and over the white water. Just as the wave is about to hit, shoot the board over it by leaning back and jetting the board forward. If it is a longer board you may need to take an extra step on the way out the back. Make sure you shoot the board with an upward projection so that it doesn’t come straight back into you. The whole purpose of this technique is to get the board over the white water so that it doesn’t pull so much with the leash and potentially take somebody out that is behind you. Of course your sacrificing yourself a little, but at this point it’s about damage control. Remember after shooting the board, get yourself down underwater in case the board decides to come back with the white water.

Scott and Ginny’s Interview—Beach paddling event for autism preludes NYC | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com—

VIRGINIA BEACH – Four locals planning to paddle around Manhattan for autism awareness practiced during a 10-mile stand-up paddle event held in Virginia Beach on Saturday.

About 50 area stand-up paddle boarders came together for Stand Up VB, which benefited several charities: Surfers Healing VB, Team Hoyt VB and Surfers Environmental Alliance. They raised $6,000 for the organizations.

Doug Ellis Jr. of the North End was the first to complete the local paddle event.

Husband and wife team Ginny and Scott Cohen are directors of Surfers Healing VB, an autism outreach organization that provides a day of surfing for children with autism while their families enjoy the beach. Patrick McLaughlin of Croatan will join Ellis and the Cohens for SEA Paddle NYC, a 28-mile paddle around Manhattan.

“There’s a swirl of excitement around this paddle,” said Ginny Cohen.

Since the day she was born, Miami Beach, FL, native and top East Coast paddleboarder Cynthia Aguilar has had two all-consuming passions — a love for the water and a desire to help others. She finally found the perfect outlet for both of her ambitions several years ago, when she began performing record-setting long-distance paddles to raise money for charity. Now, she’s about a month away from performing her greatest charitable and athletic feat yet: a 130-mile solo paddle from Cuba to Key West, which she hopes will raise $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Hey guys,
Wanted to send you a link to check out My Local Lineup where they picked up our post-race blog post from Deanwatersports.blogspot.com, PLUS video + pics!
John, thought this would be cool to share with your friends in Wilmington.
