SURF: Wrightsville Beach, NC: Thigh-waist+ with offshore winds. Looks good. Not epic, but good
WEATHER: Mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 80s.
WIND:Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.
TIDES: Low Tide:10:07AM, High Tide: 4:46 PM
RECCO: The ICWW is a little rough. I’d go between the bridges at WB or hide in the creeks at high tide. Banks channel and the ICWW are goign to suck with the winds and boat traffic.

Hear from Chris Hill that it was SUP heaven with spitting barrels today at Topsail. It was one of those days where it was too exciting to event stop and take pictures. Tomorrow am, I’ll try to shoot some. Holy crap was it fun today. Check out the daily report photos on wblivesurf.com if you haven’t seen what you missed. We should have waves for the next 4-5 days. I’m probably taking out my Fish in the morning, then the C4 SubVector in the afternoon. Can’t wait.
I want to remind people that the Distressed Mullet Forum is open to anyone who wants to sell used boards. Just log in and post. We’re in the Southeast, but have at it. We’ve been able to have people ship us some great boards from CA and the Eaton site. Let’s see how it works. The more the merrier. I hope you can sell your board and a few people get some race boards and start cranking. Imaes have to be less than 500KB jpeg
By the end of next week, there’ll be at least 5 Ron House race boards here in NC. I have a 14′ coming. It should ship today. There’s a 12’6″ carbon race board on its way and possibly a second 12’6″
This is just another step along the specialization trend. In the beginning, people get an all-around board they can surf. Then, they get into racing and get a race board they can take out in flat water and downwinders. Then, they get a specific flat-water race board. Then their wives divorce them and take the house and kids and they’re left with their boards, happy and tired from a good session.
Ron’s a super guy and an icon. If you don’t know him or his boards, check out:
http://www.ronhousepaddlesurf.com/
or this article in East Coast Paddle Surfing
http://www.eastcoastpaddlesurfing.com/shopcontent.asp?type=Ron%20House
This is the board I bought from Jeremy Riggs (thank you!): http://distressedmullet.com/?p=568
Note: I’ve put carbon on the rails and added a layer of 4S to make it more durable (photos to come). I’m a klutz and break everything. It was necessary.
It’s going to be super interesting to see where this goes. The accelerated fragmentation and specialization of the SUP world is inevitable. One board can not be all things to all people. And the industry is moving so quickly, the designs we see this winter won’t look like the ones we’re riding in a year. That’s why so many shapers are hesitating before going into production models. The technology and designs are moving so quickly that by the time they have a template in place, the designs have evolved.
Then you have differences in conditions. Gary Wise was riding a Mark Raaphorst F-14 designed specifically for the East Coast, smaller troughs, choppier conditions than HA. It’s moving so quickly.
Back to the post: It’s very cool to see Ron breaking in here. Great guy with a ton of knowledge. Watching all this happen has been awesome. I love to see the new designs. Email me photos. Post them on the site. Whatever works. Thanks Ron!

These cold mornings confuse the crap out of me. You have 45 degree air, 65 degree water and a cold northwest wind. You have to balance comfort while paddling, while protecting against submersion.
The general rule for hypothermia is 100 degrees. When you add water temperature and air temperature together and the sum is less than 100 degrees, you need some sort of wetsuit. A sum above 100 degrees give you more latitude.
At last year’s cold water classic, I was told the best thing to wear is a really crappy wetsuit, something with holes. That way you stay warm, but not too warm. I tried that. It worked pretty well, but the seams were uncomfortable after a few miles. You sacrifice range of motion. I started to layer, but peeling tight clothes off in a cold paddle isn’t the perfect scenario.
I took that wetsuit and cut off the top, making wetsuit pants. This worked great. It protected my legs from the cold air and splashing. Then one day, I fell in. They were like clown pants or those baggy 80s weightlifter pants. I was trying to pull them up and get on my board. Nightmare.
This year, I face the same issue. And while training for flatwater races, I’m doing too many miles to be uncomfortable. I travel too far away from the dock to risk hypothermia. So I’m gathering so elements to help. Because our sport is so relatively new, I can’t help but think other watersports have already faced and solved these issues. In fact, they have—to a degree.
NRS makes a wetsuit pant. It’s called the NRS Hydroskin. I bought a pair yesterday at Great Outdoor Provision center. They are only .5mm, but have a “Thermaplush” liner that “increases insulation, repels moisture and dries quickly.” It also has a drawstring at the top to keep them on when you fall in.

Ths is not me
I took them out yesterday afternoon. The air temp was over 70 and the water was around 65. It was a warm day and I wanted to see if they would be too hot. They weren’t. I fell in a few times as I was paddling out into the surf, and the water did wick off quickly. It felt like a dry suit. If I can layer the tops, that would work great, reserving my wetsuit for really cold days and surfing.
I’m waiting to see how the colder weather affects these, but so far, I’m really impressed. They’re super comfortable and warm and save me $ on something like a triathlete wetsuit, an Orca with no sleeves or a Desoto Bibjohn. We’ll see as the weather warms up.
Great Outdoor Provision Company has these for $89.99. Most of the online stores have them at the same price. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND TRYING THEM ON. And loosen the drawstring. I would have ordered a large according to their size scale, but the mediums fit me better. (5’10″, 175)
I’m also using my O’Neil superfreak 5:4 split-toe booties. I don’t care how much you have up top, when my feet go, I’m miserable. The dropped deck on my Ron House board means my feet are consistently wet.

There is some news that we’d like to share. The highlights are here in this email but there is a full press release on the website.
Highlights:
Eastern Surfing Association, the 10,000 member governing body of amateur surfing for the East Coast of the United States, today announced their immediate withdrawal from Surfing America in an October 2009 Board of Directors vote.
While the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) continues to support their members who participate in Surfing America events, the secrecy with which Surfing America instilled the Surfing America Prime Series, without the input of the ESA, led to a majority vote to leave the national governing body of surfing.
„Surfing America ‚s refusal to create an amateur surfing committee that included the ESA, which is in direct opposition to their stated organizational founding, created an unprecedented event that resulted in the rescinding of our inclusion in Surfing America,‰ stated Debbie Hodges, executive director of the Eastern Surfing Association.
Surfing America ‚s continued refusal to provide ESA a voting stake, or input, with regards to the Surfing America Prime Series and other Surfing America-sanctioned competitions, resulted in the Board of Directors voting to remove support, contributions, and infrastructure to all aspects of Surfing America.
as always…thanks,
Mary Ann, Jesse, and Amy

Since the year 2000, over 4,300 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli lives have been claimed by the escalating conflict in the region. The situation grew markedly worse in 2006, when Israel responded to the election of Hamas by sealing off the borders, ending the free-flow of people and goods. Palestinian militants reacted to the siege by targeting Israel’s civilian population with deadly rocket strikes; the Israeli Army countered with air strikes, targeting militants but often claiming the lives of innocent residents. In 2007 it emerged that a small group of young men were surfing in Gaza, sharing battered surfboards they had attained prior to the siege. Word traveled north to Israel, and that same year, a mixed group of Israelis and Americans delivered a dozen boards to their Palestinian counterparts. In the spring of 2008, they would attempt to deliver another 23 surfboards into Gaza. By this time the situation in Gaza had deteriorated further, the border still sealed, with military activity a near daily occurrence. “God Went Surfing With the Devil” charts the difficulties and dangers encountered by surfers in the region. Along the way it speaks to Israelis, Arab-Israelis, and Palestinians affected by the violence, charting their daily struggle to supersede the conflict through the joys of surfing.

A mermaid, a pirate and an octopus walk into the bar at Dockside and the bartender asks, “What is this, some kind of joke?”
No, it was the freaky floatilla… And yes, anyone who got there early, sorry. We were all late, pre-floatila-ing it up at Sidearm.
The paddle was a blast. People waved us over to boats and docks. We were given beers and Snickers bars. A good haul. Next year, we’ll do it at noon so we don’t get in the way of either peak trick-or-treating hours or dinner plans. It was trippy to look behind me and see the Gordon’s Fisherman, a ballerina and a Luchador passing Mott’s seafood. I think this could be the start of something great. Next year, we’ll also make it anything you can paddle to get as many people out as possible. People around Harbor Island will know the early trick-or-treaters will be dock knocking from noon to 2.
Thanks again to everyone who came out in costume. Next year will be even better.
