Born in upstate New York, live in Detroit.

What is your occupation?

Environmental law professor and Great Lakes water lawyer.

Where do you SUP the most?

The Detroit River and all over the Great Lakes.

Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?

BlkBox Surf and Great Lakes Surf Shop.

What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?

BlkBox Uno at home, Naish One on the go.

Do you own any other paddleboards, surfskis or OCs and what kind?

Plenty of extra boards to share with friends and visitors.

What paddle do you use?

Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?

Nope, I’m really happy with BlkBox and Naish.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?

Lake Nicaragua, which could be destroyed by a new trans-ocean canal.

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?

Just keep learning – pro tip from Larry Cain.

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?

Someone on shore asked if I’m Jesus.

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Granola bar, almonds, and coconut oil.

Goals for this next year?

Explore new places, push myself farther and faster, and show the beauty of the water to more people.

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

Tacos.

Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.

Run, especially along the water or through the woods.

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

A travel board that fits carry-on.

What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?

Winter.

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

My first OABI.

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.

Doug – when I was paddling the Detroit River, he was on shore gazing. I asked if he wanted to meet up and paddle, and we’ve had great times and conversations since. He is a really kind and caring person.

What was your best SUP travel trip?

Guatemala.
