Another paddleboarder drowns: This time in Ft. Meyers Beach, FL

According to the News Press, a 62-year-old man who went missing in the water while paddleboarding with his wife. They were about two miles south of the fishing pier. The man fell off his board and did not resurface. It does not appear that he was wearing a personal floatation device (PFD) or a leash. (read full article here)

I does not appear that Mr. Miller was wearing a personal floatation device (PFD) or a leash. It’s not clear whether he had a PFD on board.

However, what makes this interesting is that conditions were calm.According to the News Press, “The National Weather Service’s Marine Forecast reported low winds and light chop around the time when the man went missing.”

Most of these accidents occur when winds kick up and separate paddlers from their boards. One similar incident happened in January on St. Augustine Beach when the Coast Guard recovered the body of 59-year-old Kenton Miller. Read more here

In another accident in New Zealand, Amie Russell had her leash caught under a boat and the current kept her from resurfacing. Read more here
